Christians are commanded in Scripture to study to show ourselves approved so that we can rightly divide the Word of Truth. This task involves continual study of the Bible.

It is our duty to examine and re-examine the Bible as we grow in spiritual maturity, and as we do this we need to be objective enough to weed out our presuppositions that are wrong and replace them with the truth. This gradual ascent to the true meaning of the Bible is called the hermeneutical spiral.

Philippians 2:1-2 Word Study

"If there is any consolation of love, fellowship of the Spirit, affection, compassion, then be of the same mind, with the same love united in spirit, with one purpose."
'Encouragement in Christ' (paraklesis) - exhortation, comfort, consolation
'Consolation of love' - 
consolation (paramythion) - persuasive address
love (agape) - love
'fellowship of the Spirit' -
fellowship (koinonia) - joint participation
Spirit (pneuma) - literally breath
affection (splagchnon) - bowels, the seat of tender affections like kindness, benevolence
compassion (oiktirmos) - pity, mercy, compassion
'same mind' - 
same (auto) - same
mind (phroneo, a verb) - to feel, think, to seek, to strive, to be of one's party and side with him (in public affairs)
'same love' - (auto agape) - same love
'united in spirit' (symppsychos) - of one accord
intent on one purpose (phroneo) - see above

Vs 1 seems to have the overall impression of tender feelings for each other.  If you have any sort of tender feelings for each, then...
Vs 2 We should be able to have the same way of thinking and like-mindedness.
